Kek Lapis Dayang Salhah

Some said if you wanna find a good Kek Lapis in Kuching, the best place is Kek Lapis Dayang Salhah.. It is situated at Kampung Melayu on the other side of the Waterfront Kuching.. and really is the talk of town place for Semenanjung people.. but not to some of Kuching locals.. like Susan and Mike.. hehehe..
Well.. true enough that the place is quite famous, as from the moment I arrived, there were people in the bungalow house in and out, non-stop.. there are lots of cake samples for people to try.. so if u wanna eat free kek lapis, and not pay.. just go there and try.. lots of varieties.. hahahha.. just kidding.. There's even wall of fame where famous people who've been there were portrayed on the wall.. What surprised me here was how big the business is.. there are stacks and stacks of kek lapis to choose from, and they have all the varieties from durian to strawberry flavour, from modern name to traditional name.. all with colorful rainbow colors you can get.. I've tried some of the samples at the Waterfront, but I think the one they have here is even far better in taste and presentation.. and Susan and Mike agreed too.. and later the ladies were posing in front of the samples.. I have to buy a few to bring home.. and at RM10 per packet, it was really a good buy with so many selection.. which you will never regret.. All is packed in a box.. for me to bring home soon..

Meeting Shirley and Dinner @ Kampung Buntal

We were supposed to meet Shirley and her hubby earlier, but since our trip to Serikin took longer than it would, we met up with them quite late, over the late lunch.. Shirley, my university mate is also pregnant.. It was quite a good meeting as it's been years that we all haven't met each other and putting us all in one place really gave a havoc to the place.. The 2 pregnant ladies talking to each other over drinks.. so cute and funny! I once asked them to put their rounded tummy on each other together so that the babies can talk to each other too.. and it will look cute... and I was the one who get scolded at last.. hahaha!
Late in the evening, we drove all the way to a famous place for seafood, called Kampung Buntal for a seafood makan2..the trip was about 1/2 an hour all the way to Santubong area, where the Sarawak Cultural Village is located.. Unfortunately, the image wasn't that satisfactory that I can only get some of them in the blog.. Check out what we have..
The Midin.. or Pucuk Paku goreng belacan.. The Bamboo Shell with curry..Sotong Masak Chili.. and Siakap Sweet & Sour.. and a few other more..
We had a fulfiling dinner and later had a walk at the beach there.. too bad it's at nite.. so we can't see the scenery.. the end of 2nd day..

Shopping at Serikin

I was all set to buy the tikar Sarawak when Mike told me that I can get a good price in Serikin.. which is about 45 minutes drive from Kuching.. Serikin is located at the border of Indonesia.. which is quite a famous place in Sarawak to buy cheap stuff.. equivalent to Pengkalan Kubur and Bukit Kayu Hitam here..We arrived late, at 11am.. and there were lots of people filling up the place.. school holidays, remember? Somehow, the weather was so hot during this time so everybody either got themselves an umbrella each or a cap.. and we were all covered with sweat.. Varieties of Tikar Sarawak to choose from.. with so many different designs and colors.. and here's my final pick and Susan, Mike and Azyy posing under the shades running from the hot sun.. Crafts from rattans.. and from shells.. and when we're done shopping, we ended up carrying tikar sarawak that's been packed nicely for shipping.. and here's how the carrying was done.. heheh!and we headed back safely to Kuching.. Another meeting with Shirley and hubby after this..

The Waterfront Bazaar

Kuching Waterfront.. this place has been a long time favorite place to shop when one comes to Kuching.. this is what makes Kuching unique.. the waterfront is developed in such a way that it's good for shopping and relaxing.. and perfect for photo taking of the peaceful yet lively city.. perfect huh? The latest Sarawak Convention Centre on the other side of Sarawak River.. simply a breathtaking building.. the new landmark for Kuching.. The row of old but refurbished shophouses where the goods and crafts shops are located.. The modern boat with the high rise buildings overlooking Sarawak River.. The small sampan to cross to the other side of Sarawak River The varities of crafts from Indonesia and local made are sold here.. I'm crazy about wood crafts, so this is really a long stop for me to check out what they offer.. and the ever famous Gambir Sarawak.. which is made from getah gambir.. and the usage?? Go figure! Hehehe!Lots of Indon made and also local made kain also sold here..and rows of sarawak pottery to choose from.. but the price is quite expensive here laaa.. Rows of Kek Lapis occupying the streets of the shops.. this is really fast becoming the new icon of a gift from Kuching.. the very nice colorful varieties of Kek Lapis awaiting for people to try and buy..
Along the way, I saw this guy with a local traditional guitar like, called Sape.. played a lullaby on the street.. and with its unique sound, who wouldn't stop to check out the sound of Sape.. so nice and the fresh from farm Black Pepper just arrived to the shop.. at only RM16 per kg.. my frined said it was cheap.. so I bought some for my mom.. I would say you can find almost everything here at the Waterfront.. a must go place when visiting Kuching..

The Steamboat Dinner

We were supposed to attend Kuching Fest at night for the orgy of local food galore you can find here.. but the crowd being so full and massive traffic jam at the area, plus we were starving to the max forced us to find a restaurant for dinner first..
It was my request that we go to a steamboat place called Hornbill, but upon arrival there, the place was quite packed up and the food is not that much already, so we decided to check out the new place behind Hornbill..
The package is so cheap here, at RM16 per head, and varieties of choices we can get! Apa lagi.. wallap laaa... The Pregnant Susan and Mike were so patiently setting up the steamboat pan.. you guys are so cool! Checkout the varieties.. just choose any and boil it or cook it yourself.. From plain to barbecue choices of chicken, meat and seafood choices.. The finished food.. yummy! and the full faces of them all.. Yeah I know, I was not in the photo.. I'm a photographer, remember?
